Training Instructions

AALAS Learning Library (ALL) assigned modules.  Enroll for online training following the directions provided.  Be sure that you register under the University of Utah rather than creating a free account. Under a free account you will not be able to access all required modules and the IACUC will not be able to confirm the completion of modules (you may have to retake them).

ENROLLMENT FOR ONLINE TRAINING

• Go to AALAS Learning Library (http://www.aalaslearninglibrary.org)

• On the home page, go to the right upper side and click sign in

• On the next page, click “Enroll Now

• The questions is: “Were you provided an access code by an institution already subscribed to the AALAS  Learning Library?”

• Click Yes

• Enter the access code: Utah

• Select “Submit

• Enter first name and last name and email address

• Choose a username. PLEASE NOTE: no spaces can be used between words

• Choose a password; please keep a record of this login for later use. The password must have 8 characters. PLEASE NOTE: if you forget your username and or password, please use the “forgot username or password?” link, which is adjacent to the login area. This utility will email your username and password to you.

• Select “Submit

• Enter your contact information as requested.  Please make sure that your U of U email address is correct. Email addresses may be used to send updates concerning the Occupational Health and Safety Program and general animal use training updates.

• Select “Submit

• Select “Submit” and verify and print your personal information for later use

• To find the training modules needed they are now all located under Tracks listed under the “Tracks” tab.

**REQUIRED (AALAS) ONLINE TRAINING MODULES

• Under the tab “Tracks

• Select the appropriate courses to be taken (Everyone must take the Occupational Health and Safety Training course, Core Module- University of Utah, and the Common Compliance Course and other species specific courses depending upon research being conducted).

  1. Occupational Health and Safety Training Module – Select the “Occupational Health and Safety Training” and complete the course modules. This is a required course of all personnel working with animals at the U of U.
  2. Core Training Module – The course goes over all the regulations and policies of the federal government and the University of Utah. It provides information on humane care and use of laboratory animals.
  3. Species Specific Training Modules – Select the animal species that you will be working with and complete the course and exam for that species.
  4. Common Compliance Issues Module– This course teaches the reasons of why laboratories do not stay in compliance. It also provides directions on ways to stay in compliance and how easy it is to do so.
  5. Surgery and Pain Management Training Modules– If you are conducting or assisting in performing surgery then select the “Surgery and Pain Management Training Track” and complete all three of the modules.

                                The three required course modules are:

  • Pain Management for Laboratory Animals
  • Post Procedural Care of Rats and Mice in Research
  • Aseptic Technique for Rodent Survival Surgery or
  • Large Animal Surgery: Aseptic Technique and Anesthesia

**REQUIRED (“IN PERSON”) U of U IN-HOUSE TRAINING

  1. Facility Access Orientation – This course is provided by the OCM department. Please contact the OCM Training Coordinator, Sheryl Dutson at sdutson@ocm.utah.edu or (801) 587-0991.

This course is required to initiate access approval for any of the animal vivaria under the oversight of the Office of Comparative Medicine (OCM). An overview of vivarium facilities, assigned supervisors and specialty services/capabilities will be given. Presentation of policies, safety procedures, training opportunities, and procedures to ensure animal health and welfare will be discussed.

  • CO2 Euthanasia – is a required “in-person” training course (only if euthanasia will be done on study by CO2) and must be completed before research can be conducted. This course is taught in-house through the OCM department staff. Please contact Sheryl Dutson at sdutson@ocm.utah.edu or (801) 587-0991. This “in-person” training provides information on how to euthanize animals when using CO2.
  • “In Person” training for inexperienced research staff – any research staff that does not have previous experience in conducting research procedures, listed as their study responsibilities, and with animals must complete the following “in person” training. Please contact Sheryl Dutson at sdutson@ocm.utah.edu or (801) 587-0991 to sign up for the training.
  • Species Specific Handling and Techniques Workshopsthese courses are provided by the OCM department. Please contact the OCM Training Coordinator, Sheryl Dutson at sdutson@ocm.utah.edu or (801) 587-0991. These courses include a presentation of animal husbandry, animal behavior, animal handling/restraint, gender determination and general health assessment procedures for the respective species. Opportunity to practice handling and restraint of animals, gender determination as well as practice approved injection/collection procedures in a workshop setting will be provided.
  • Species Specific Procedures that include Surgery, Anesthesia, Suture, etc.:
    • Principles of Surgery Lecture: This course is provided by the OCM department. Please contact the OCM Training Coordinator, Sheryl Dutson at sdutson@ocm.utah.edu or (801) 587-0991.  This lecture covers the following principles: anesthesia (types, approved for use, monitoring of, recovery from); analgesia (approved for use, strategies for pain management); aseptic technique (animal prep, surgeon prep, surgical site prep, surgical field prep) and tissue handling (why important, incision technique, suture technique).
    • Principles of Surgery Workshop: This course is provided by the OCM department. Please contact the OCM Training Coordinator, Sheryl Dutson at sdutson@ocm.utah.edu or (801) 587-0991.  This course provides an opportunity to practice aseptic procedure, anesthesia monitoring, sterilization procedure and tissue handling techniques such as suturing in a workshop setting.
